What is the ADHD Symbol?

Symbols are an impactful way to show solidarity, support, and pride for neurodiversity. A key way for people with ADHD to raise awareness of their cause is by using the ADHD symbol. As a multicoloured butterfly image, the ADHD symbol has an impact in many ways. So, read on to explore more about the ADHD awareness symbol, where it came from, and how to use it.

What is the ADHD Awareness Symbol?

The official ADHD symbol is the rainbow butterfly. The butterfly image represents many aspects of ADHD including rapid mental movements. It also reflects the ability of people with ADHD to adapt and transform to life’s challenges. And the rainbow colours signify the diversity of thinking in people with ADHD and the variety of potential they offer.

ADHD affects up to 5% of the adult population and up to 7% of children. It’s a form of neurodivergence that impacts executive functioning and can lead to difficulties with working memory, organisation skills, and emotional regulation. Each of these effects can lead to symptoms like hypersensitivity to social situations, sensory overload, and emotional outbursts. The ADHD symbol offers a key way to raise awareness of the challenges of ADHD and to showcase positive support for people who have ADHD.

The History of the ADHD Symbol

The ADHD awareness symbol emerged during discussions in online support groups. In these conversations, group members with ADHD took inspiration from the rainbow colours of the original neurodiversity symbol – now the Autism Infinity Symbol. They noticed how the rainbow colours reflected the diversity of experiences for people with neurodivergence and continued this idea into creating the ADHD symbol.

Group members also recognised how the infinity symbol represented the limitless complexities of neurodivergence. So they reshaped the symbol to represent ADHD as a butterfly. Like a butterfly, people with ADHD have fast and shifting thoughts and emotions. But they can also adapt and grow in the face of life’s challenges. This is a positive image that people with ADHD are happy to get behind.

What is the Meaning Behind the ADHD Symbol?

The ADHD symbol carries several meanings and interpretations. Here are some key elements that underline the impact of the rainbow butterfly ADHD symbol.

  1. High energy and fast movement: Butterfly wings represent quick-moving kinetic energy and this reflects the high levels of emotional and mental energy found in people with ADHD.
  2. Shifting attention: A butterfly can shift its attention and flight path from flower to branch. This also reflects the frequency of shifting attention and focus in people with ADHD.
  3. A sense of uniqueness: Each butterfly has a distinct pattern and colour scheme that’s unique to them. And research shows people with autism are up to 70% more likely to have comorbid ADHD, revealing how not everyone with ADHD will have the same experience.
  4. The potential for transformation: Like how a butterfly emerges from a chrysalis, people with ADHD can go through significant periods of personal growth and discovery before emerging with their own unique and well-developed character.

Is There an Official Colour for ADHD Awareness?

While the official rainbow butterfly symbol has multiple colours there is also a single colour that can represent ADHD awareness. In line with ADHD awareness month every October, the ADHD awareness symbol is an orange ribbon. The colour of orange offers a representation of energy, warmth, and creativity which are all common traits in people with ADHD. It blends the energy of red with the happiness of yellow to symbolise enthusiasm and stimulation.

ADHD Awareness Month happens every year throughout October. Wearing an orange ribbon during this time can foster discussion and raise awareness of key issues.  For instance, up to 70% of people with ADHD will experience depression at some point in their lives and need treatment for it. ADHD Awareness Month is one way to promote better societal acceptance of these issues and increase understanding.

The Impact of the ADHD Symbol

Supporters of ADHD can embrace the rainbow butterfly as their chosen ADHD symbol or wear an orange ribbon. Either way, wearing or showing their ADHD awareness symbol can have a positive impact in many ways:

  • Increases knowledge and awareness: Displaying the rainbow symbol helps to spread awareness and intrigue in other people who don’t know much about ADHD. It can help them see ADHD as a normal part of society.
  • Fuels discussion: Symbols can open doors and discussions to help other people grasp the impact of ADHD. They can also help to increase empathy and allow others to ask questions to increase their understanding.
  • Helps to access treatment: Displaying the ADHD symbol helps you to become an advocate for ADHD awareness while gaining better access to treatment.
  • Facilitates earlier diagnosis: Over 9% of US children aged up to 17 have an ADHD diagnosis and an earlier diagnosis leads to better treatment and success for children.
  • Fosters support for families: Parents and guardians of children with ADHD can struggle to find appropriate treatment or support from schools and local activities. The ADHD symbol can help unlock information, resources, and treatment.
  • Reduces stigmas and misconceptions: The more that people see the ADHD symbol, celebrate ADHD awareness month, and feel free to talk about and promote ADHD awareness, the more normalised it becomes.

Neurodiversity is a complex issue. However using symbols like the Autism Infinity Symbol, ADHD symbol, and the ADHD awareness symbol during October can open discussion. Using symbols in marketing materials, in digital and social media, and in physical form can all make a difference in understanding the complex issues people with ADHD face.
