A hands-on interactive session for workplace assessors

Exploring the Overlap Between Neurodiversity and Chronic Health Conditions

Date: Friday, 17 April 2026
Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Neurodiversity-adjacent symptoms and chronic health conditions can sometimes present in similar ways, creating challenges when identifying needs and recommending effective support. This session will explore how these overlaps can appear in practice, including situations where individuals who are not neurodivergent experience barriers comparable to those faced by neurodivergent people due to chronic illness.

Two people sit at a desk, discussing documents and what to say or what not to say in the workplace. One gestures towards papers while the other listens thoughtfully. Office supplies, charts, and an Occupational Health UK leaflet are on the desk.

Exploring the Overlap Between Neurodiversity and Chronic Health Conditions

What We’ll Cover

This session will explore the discussion topic:

“The co-occurrence of neurodiversity-adjacent symptoms and chronic health conditions.”

Together, we’ll examine real-world scenarios where neurodivergent traits and chronic illnesses intersect. The discussion will also consider individuals who may not identify as neurodivergent but whose chronic health conditions present similar workplace challenges.

The session is structured to move beyond theory into practical application. After an initial introduction of the topic, attendees will break into smaller groups to:

• Explore specific conditions in depth
• Identify meaningful questions to better understand individual needs
• Consider appropriate support strategies
• Discuss how support may vary in atypical workplaces
• Share approaches for justifying recommendations to employers or the DWP (for Access to Work cases)

We’ll then regroup to exchange insights, creating a collaborative learning experience built on shared expertise.

Agenda

  • 10:00 – 10:20 | Welcome & introduction to the topic
  • 10:20 – 10:40 | Breakout sessions – each group will explore a health condition
